Prepare for an accurate test
Small changes to your environment can dramatically change the outcome of a speed test. Use the checklist below to capture the connection you really have, not just the one momentarily available.
Stabilize your network
- Pause large downloads, cloud backups, and video streams on other devices before starting.
- Prefer a wired Ethernet connection when available; otherwise sit near your Wi‑Fi access point and limit interference.
- Close unused browser tabs and background apps that may throttle CPU or radio resources on phones.
Pick the right test mode
- Auto: Auto-selects the closest SpeedTribe mirror from our worldwide pool for a neutral benchmark.
- Quick Test and Full Test: Both quick and full tests use the same object, so you can repeat runs knowing the route stays consistent.
- Repeat the test at different times of day to observe peak-hour slowdowns that impact streaming quality and browsing speed.
Document the context
- Note your ISP plan, modem/router model, and device so you can compare with contractual promises.
- Export results to create a timestamped PDF when sharing data with your provider or regulators.
- History panel tracks trends after firmware updates or home network changes.
